Less than two years ago, we were eager for the Wii to finally be launched in the world. It was at those times that we were ignorant about one of the Wii’s most important features, the Wii Shop Channel. It is here where fans of classic Nintendo games have found heaven. What is better than acquiring old lost classics like the Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Metroid, and even Sega Games, for less than ten dollars each? When Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was released for the Virtual Console, this marked the 100th title to be released by this mean. What is even more amazing is that this Monday, the 250th title was finally released.

And what a title it was! Most new, or old, gamers are familiar with the Paper Mario series and the success they have had as excellent RPGs. Another Mario RPG series, Mario and Luigi, have had their success as well. What surprises me is that most gamers who have played these games are ignorant that there was a Mario RPG before these ones. That game is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, released in 1996 for the SNES. This is a very special game, since it was made in collaboration between Square, now Square Enix, and Nintendo, one of the first RPGs to be made in collaboration between these two companies. But let’s talk about gameplay. As most RPG’s, the core of this game consists of turn based battles. You control Mario on the map, and once you come in contact with an enemy, you will enter a new screen in which your party of three people, including Peach (known as Toadstool), Bowser, Geno, and Mallow, accompanying Mario which must always fight, battle the monsters encountered. At first, this seems like your regular RPG, in which you advance, collect items, level up, and fight enemies with special attacks and wait for the animations to finish. However, what made this game innovative and inspired further RPGs is the Action Command, which consists in doing specific actions during your attacks. For example, when Mario attacks with his fists, if you press the attack button just as Mario lands the attack, he will attack once again for more damage in a single attack. Another action command is pressing the button repeatedly during the animation to increase the damage of the attack. I’m afraid this is all I can tell you, since I don’t want to spoil the game for you, and if you have already completed this game, you know exactly how awesome it is. So, what are you waiting for? There is no excuse now, since you can buy this game for only eight dollars from the Wii Shop Channel! Trust me, once you play this game, you won’t let go of it.
